The Family Fun Museums of Galveston Island

Galveston is one of the oldest cities in Texas and has a plethora of things to do once you arrive upon Galveston Island. Rich with a colorful history, Galveston was home to Pirate Jean Lafitte in the early 1800’s, a Civil War Battle during the War Between the States, the Great Hurricane of 1900, & Winter Home to President Roosevelt at the Hotel Galvez during World War II. The Lone Star Flight Museum which is located next to Moody Gardens displays more than 40 historically significant aircraft, houses hundreds of artifacts related to the history of flight, and is an aerospace museum as well. Not only can you get in the planes, you can fly in the planes too.

Galveston Railroad Museum, located at the far West end of the Strand, houses one of the largest displays of Railroad Engines and assorted Cars in the Southwest United States. How long has it been since you were in a real TRAIN? This Museum is owned and operated by the Center for Transportation and Commerce, a non-profit organization.

The Texas Seaport Museum, home of the celebrated 1877 Tall Ship Elissa, a floating National Historic Landmark which has also been designated one of America’s Treasures by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The adjacent museum and theater, tells of times gone by, and discusses the Nation’s only computerized listing of immigrants to Galveston, Texas. The Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig Museum and Education Center is located at Pier 20 and is a retired jackup drilling rig. See videos about the offshore industry. View and learn the story of offshore oil and gas from seismic technology to exploration and production. Drill bits and remotely-operated vehicles (ROVs), as well as, videos and exhibits, explain drilling, geology, well servicing and production can be seen.

The Rosenberg Library Museum is located inside the historic Rosenberg Library on 23rd Street just North of Broadway. The Museum offers exhibits and special displays throughout the library, with four large gallery exhibits on the fourth floor (previously labeled “third” floor).
